When is the right time to get sober?
Los Angeles, California—February, 2009
As the saying goes “there’s no time like the present”. So why not get sober today? Well, you can probably come up with a dozen reasons. “What about my job?” “How will I pay my bills? “Who’s going to take care of my family?” “Who’s going to watch my dog?” “I have a lot of things I need to do”.
The truth of the matter is even if you haven’t lost everything your life is a train wreck and all the best intentions in the world won’t amount to anything if you can’t stop using drugs and alcohol. “None of those things will mean anything if you can’t stop using,” says Moe G. a recovering heroin addict with two and a half years clean and sober.
“If you’re addicted everything that you think is important in your life is probably suffering right now. Your family, friends, work and money. None of these things will keep you sober. I had a big job, a big house in the hills, a jaguar, housekeeper, nanny for my kids, plenty of money. None of it kept me sober. I was empty inside and the only thing I wanted to do was get loaded. I kept everything together for a few years but eventually I lost it all. You don’t have to lose everything, but that’s what it took for me to get sober.”
If you think you have a problem with drugs and alcohol, you probably do. The best time to get sober is right now. Chances are the more you delay the worse things will get.
